The official opening of the Mayo School of Music took place in Kiltimagh on

Sunday 4th of June. The festivities kicked off at 2:00pm with the Sax Pistols performing outside in the bandstand. Entertaining the public as they passed through the school were the students of the School of Music. Jimmy Brennan also held a captive audience performing classical guitar in Music Room 4. Before the official opening, the Cill Aodáin Choral Society gave a wonderful performance to an appreciative crowd.

Lyric FM’s Niall Carroll was M.C for the day. Deputy Enda Kenny performed a tree planting and spoke about the enormous benefit of having a School of Music in Mayo. Dr. John O’Conor performed the official opening to a large cheer from the crowd.  He spoke about the West of Ireland not having the same opportunities in music as people from Dublin, until now. He said the people of Mayo should be proud to have such a wonderful facility available to them. He said he was proud to be there and praised Finola and Avril for following their dream.

Musical Director of the School Finola Higgins-Cosgrove and Avril Forde-Mcgreal both spoke about their plans to give people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to learn and perform music. They spoke of their passion for music and that the School has been a life long dream come true.

The ceremony finished with a rousing version of “When the Saints come Marching in” by the Cill Aodáin Choral Society.
